All of his adult life, my grandfather has made rounds every night, meticulously checking that all of the doors in his house are locked. Since my grandfather doesn’t have much short term memory anymore he now makes his rounds several times a night. One of the locks on the front door is such that even if you have a key you can’t get inside (it is a sort of bolt, I guess). So when my grandfather begins his rounds around 7 or 8 o’clock, he often locks one of us out. This happens so much that we have taken to putting signs on the door saying things like “Kathy is at the store” or “We are at church. Be back at 10:00.” I have my own sign: the “Harriett is out” sign. Whenever I go somewhere, this sign is placed on the door. The rest of the time, it is taped to the bottom of the stairs by the door.
As I was passing the stairs today, I noticed my sign had been modified.

How about, “Harriett...not just a good idea, she’s the Law.”?
ReplyDeletehahaha. Also, this just in: Over dinner, we're discussing the sign, and my Mom says: "That's funny, you know, every time I passed that sign I wanted to make those same changes!". And my Dad says: "The only difference between you and me is that I actually did it!". hahaha. :-) They've spent toooo much time together!
